What Is the Strongest 3D Printing Filament?

Not only the looks matter when 3D printing functional parts. The parts also need to be reliable in different situations. Whether you're prototyping, creating tools, or
replacing a worn-out component, the strength of your filament can ultimately
be the deciding factor in failing or succeeding.

But what does “strongest” mean in the 3D printing
industry? It sounds like a simple question: What's the strongest filament?

But strength can refer to many things, for instance
absorbing impacts, withstanding bending, resisting tension, surviving repeated
flexing over time, enduring heat or maintaining layer integrity. 

In the end, it depends on what you are printing and
what your print needs to be able to endure. What’s considered “strong” for a
rigid bracket might be totally different from what’s needed in a flexible
hinge.

To find out if a filament is suitable for your
project, test your filament’s strength at home with the drop-weight, flex and
bend, tensile, fatigue, or heat resistance test:



Drop-Weight
Test (Impact Strength)&nbsp;

What it tests:
How well a part withstands sudden shocks or drops.
 How to do it: Print a standardized part, then drop it from various
heights. Record the height at which it breaks.
 Why it matters: Simulates bumps, drops, or collisions.

Flex
and Bend Test (Flexural Strength/Stiffness)

What it tests: How much a part can bend before it deforms or snaps.
 How to do it: Print a flat bar or beam, place it on two supports, then
gradually press down in the center and measure the deflection before failure.
 Why it matters: Essential for parts under constant pressure or stress.

Tensile Test (Tensile Strength)&nbsp;

What it tests: How much pulling force a material can take before
breaking. How to do it: Print a dog-bone-shaped test piece, hang it up from the
one end, and hang a weight from the other end. Record the weight at which the
print begins to stretch and break.
 Why it matters: Critical for structural parts, hinges, or any
application under load.

Fatigue Test (durability under repeated stress)&nbsp;

What it tests: How well a part holds up to repetitive stress or motion.
 How to do it: Flex or twist a printed part repeatedly by hand or using a
motorized jig until failure. Count the cycles.
 Why it matters: Reveals how long parts last under wear-and-tear.

Heat Distortion Temperature Test (Heat Resistance)&nbsp;

What it tests: At what temperature a part starts to deform under
load.
 How to do it: Place a printed part on two supports, like a small
bridge. Apply a weight on top. Then, slowly raise the temperature and note when
it begins to sag.
 Why it matters: Shows how well a part holds its shape in warm, loaded
conditions.

Pro tip: Always test using shapes that closely resemble your
intended application. A filament that handles stress well in a straight rod
might behave differently in a more complex geometry.

Strong Filaments &amp; Their Strength Profiles

Although no single filament is the “strongest”
filament, certain materials excel in specific types of strength and provide
good layer adhesion. If you’re aiming for durable, reliable prints, keep an eye
out for PC, Nylon, and TPU. But don’t overlook ASA and ABS, which offer
practical advantages, especially for outdoor or mechanically stressed
components. 

Nylon (PA) 
 High impact and notched impact strength, very good heat
resistance

Nylon is a versatile, semi-flexible material that is

(PC) 
 High tensile strength and impact strength
