When passion for motorsport meets cutting-edge technology, true legends come to life. This incredible 1:5 scale model of the 1967 Lotus 49 Formula 1 car is not just a display piece – it’s a masterclass in precision 3D printing, engineering, and craftsmanship.
Crafted using GreenTEC Pro CF and printed on a 0.6 mm ruby nozzle, the project showcases the true potential of high-performance filament and additive manufacturing.
Project by the Numbers
- 200 printed parts
- 15 custom printed tools & jigs
- 350 hours of print time
- 200 screws and nuts for authentic mechanical assembly
- 1200 hours in total for design, finishing, and assembly

Project Details
Every component of this Lotus 49 replica was meticulously designed based on historical documentation and photographs. True to the original, the model is fully assembled using mechanical fasteners, enabling separate finishing and painting of each part – just like a real race car.
One of the project’s standout features: Even custom tools for bending aluminum tubing (used in the roll bar and exhaust system) and molds for thermoforming the plexiglass windshield were produced using 3D printing. A perfect example of additive manufacturing supporting both form and function.

Why GreenTEC Pro CF?
GreenTEC Pro CF offers high stiffness and excellent dimensional stability, making it the ideal choice for precise technical components. Thanks to its outstanding heat resistance, the material is especially well-suited for thermal post-processing and painting.
The carbon fiber reinforcement ensures long-lasting mechanical strength, even under high loads and continuous use.

A Benchmark for Modern Model Making
This stunning project is more than a model – it’s a blueprint for how 3D printing can transform prototyping, model making, and even tooling. Hats off to Michalak Design for setting a new bar in what's possible with digital fabrication.
